The rhino crisis has been at the forefront of conservation arguments, opinions and endless debates since poaching in South Africa began to intensify in 2008/2009.
Some believe the only way to prevent the imminent extinction of South Africa's rhinos is through a market-based solution. Those who support trade claim it makes economic sense to harvest and sell rhino horn through a controlled market, which would allow private owners to benefit financially from regular horn harvesting by offloading rhino horn stockpiles to consumer countries at a discounted rate (lower than the black market).
The following articles seek to dispel some of the misinformation and disinformation regarding the proposed trade models and similar wildlife consumptive trades.
