KIFARU’S FANTASTIC FOODIE FACTS RHINOS DIET

Succulent savouries on the savannah and fabulous fruits in the rainforests this way!

HUNGRY HERBIVORES!

Galloping gourmets!  If you want to find out what tickles a rhino’s taste buds and satisfies their sweet tooth then you’ve come to the right place. Don’t expect to find any sizzling sausages, cheeky fried chicken or barbequed burgers here though! Rhinos love healthy greens and fruit so if you want to be a real rhino warrior you’ll have to eat more healthy food too!

It’s really easy to tell what types of food a rhino eats just looking at the shapes of its mouth. The types of food they eat make them either browsers or grazers. Browsers pluck food such as leaves and fruits from trees and shrubs. Grazers clip or shear vegetation usually at ground level. Check out the three easy ways to quickly spot the difference between browsers and grazers.

MIGHTY MOUTHS! BROWSERS GRAZERS

1. Browsers have smaller rounded snouts.  Grazers have longer, flatter snouts

2. Browsers have pointed mouths to pluck food.  Grazers have long, flat mouths perfect for grazing

3. A browsers head naturally points more upwards.  A grazers head naturally points downwards

Black, Javan and Sumatran rhinos are all browsers.  Their pointy shaped lips help them pluck the fruits and flowers from trees and shrubs.

White rhinos are grazers.  Adults can eat up to 120lbs of grass every single day and are more effective at shearing short grasses than an electric lawnmower.  Wow!

Greater One Horned rhinos (Indian rhinos) are actually browsers and grazers.  They eat lots of aquatic plants (plants which grow underwater), leaves, twigs and fruits, but they also feed on grasses too.

THE MUNCH BUNCH

Check out the two videos to see the difference in how a black rhino (browser) and a white rhino (grazer) feed

THE SCOOP ON POOP!

If you eat a lot of food like rhinos do you poop a lot too!  Rhino poop is more than just a yucky waste product.  Not only ,is it really good for the environment, it’s really important to rhinos too!  Check out these pooptastic facts!

THE POWER OF POOP MUCKY MESSAGE BOARDS!

Like the poop from other herbivores such as elephants, humans have found some surprising and environmentally friendly uses for rhino waste.  Check out these two pooptastic ideas!

1) MODULE THREE - RHINOS DIET.pdf

This picture is not a mud pile, but a big communal toilet called a midden. Middens are used by white and black rhinos.

White rhino middens are black in colour and full of grassy bits while black rhino middens are browner and more twiggy.

White rhinos of all ages use middens, but there is a pooping protocol and at the top of the plops is the dung of the dominant male.
